Parenting and Mental Health: 3 Things You Need to Know
As parents, we have a variety of roles that we play in our kids’ lives. For those of us that work full-time jobs or own businesses, the stresses of juggling so many responsibilities can bring on a world of fatigue and stress. We can often feel isolated, as if we’re taking care of everyone else and not having enough support or the time and energy to take care of ourselves.
Our mental health is often tested with so many responsibilities.
When we set out to start a new career or business, we often have a lot on our minds which causes us to battle a number of struggles: trouble sleeping at night, trouble staying awake during the day, difficulty letting loose and having fun, and problems relaxing. If you are a parent who’s struggling with any of this, there are a few changes you can make to bring balance back into your life.
Lack of Sleep
If you’re constantly tired yet can’t seem to get to sleep at night, you could be struggling with anxiety, insomnia, or any number of issues. If you’re experiencing a lack of sleep, it’s important to address this with your doctor; also, keeping a routine schedule, going to bed at a set time each night, and adapting your diet could help.
Stress
You could begin to feel stress in physical ways, including migraines and physical pain. If you’re feeling an increase in tension that’s causing pain or feelings of being overwhelmed, then taking regular exercise breaks, having date nights, and enjoying time with your friends can help alleviate these symptoms. Also, talking to your doctor could yield recommendations specifically for you.
Weight Changes
If you’ve noticed a drop or gain in your weight, it could be related to stress, diet, or other factors. If you’re concerned about your weight, speaking with your doctor is always a good idea.
Parents are unique in their needs and challenges, and mental health is no exception. Therapy is a great way to help maintain your mental health. Take the time to find a therapist that you can be comfortable with. It will be very beneficial in the long run. If you feel overly stressed, be sure to take a step back, make a few changes, and talk to your doctor!
